  12.      Wintner's second novel involves a country boy thrust into
  13. suburbia when his father passes away, leaving a void that can only
  14. partially be filled by a collection of recollection.  Uprooted from
  15. rural Kentucky to St. Louis, the small-framed boy lashes out at
  16. anything that threatens his memories, which determine the course of
  17. his development.  As a grown man, he looks back, in vignettes, at
  18. his accumulated memories and finally understands how, if analyzed
  19. with patience learned from the Ice King, they stop coming at you
  20. all hot and cold, and only give you goose bumps.
  21.      "The Ice King" is a story about balance, told by an author who
  22. stays on his toes.  Grade: B.
